Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Dr. Oral Buyukozturk is Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts. His research interests include mechanics and design of structures and materials, durability and sustainability of physical infrastructure, nondestructive testing (NDT) , and structural health monitoring (SHM). His areas of research also include earthquake engineering, interface fracture mechanics, fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites in structural rehabilitation, and multi-scale analysis of multi-layer material systems using molecular dynamics (MD). Educated in Istanbul Technical University, Istanbul, Turkey, Dr. Oral Buyukozturk received his graduate degrees from Cornell University and joined The Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1976. His early work prior to joining MIT involved design and safety analysis of nuclear power structures and, at Brown University, his pioneering developments in the area of non-linear finite element models and computational engineering capabilities. Professor Buyukozturk has an extensive publication and professional service record and has presented keynote lectures worldwide. His selected awards are: George W. Housner Structural Control and Monitoring Medal from the American Society of Civil Engineers (2018); Golden Mirko Ros Medal from EMPA Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (2011); Fellow of Royal Society of Edinburgh, Scotland’s, National Academy of Science and Letters (2009); ASNT (American Society of Nondestructive Testing) National Faculty Fellowship Awards (2008 and 2011); Fellow of the American Concrete Institute (ACI); Distinguished Service and Leadership Award from MIT/CEE (2018).
